Play for SOS

Play for SOS
- Your Play, Their Hope. -

Program Details
“Play for SOS” is a global initiative that uses sports to widely promote the SDG Global Indicators and unite the world in addressing the social challenges addressed by the SDGs. Key features include:

Creation of "ICONtact" and the allocation and collaboration of "issue-specific specialized support organizations/individuals."

- Appointment of a sports-related organization or individual as an icon figure for each global indicator. An "ICONtact" will serve as a central point of contact for help and advice on the social issues addressed by each global indicator, raising awareness of the issues, disseminating accurate information, and promoting collaboration with related organizations.

- For example, FC Nono, a soccer team working to address social issues in India through soccer, has been selected as an “icon figure” for Global Indicator 5.3.1, “Proportion of women aged 20-24 who were married or in a marital relationship under the age of 15 and under the age of 18". As a result, FC Nono will serve as a point of contact, raise awareness of the issue itself, and collaborate with related organizations.

-Organizations and individuals who could directly support the "proportion of women aged 20-24 who were married or in a marital relationship while under 15 or 18" issue are welcome to contact us at samasama or FC Nono.
Regarding each case brought to FC Nono, we will connect you with "issue-specific specialized support organizations and individuals" deemed appropriate for the issue. While there will be one organization or individual per global indicator, we hope to build a global network of supporters who will be responsible for the practical aspects of problem-solving.

-As in this example, we will assign a contact point to all 234 indicators. In other words, (1 iconic entity + ∞ issue--specific specialized support organizations/individuals) x 234.

-Direct Support Scheme for SOS Holders

-We will provide a matching platform that allows people in need (SOS holders) to easily register their issues, and supporters (actors) who see the posts can provide direct support. (Planned. Currently, matching is performed manually.)

-We will also provide a system that clearly visualizes whether support is reaching them. (Planned)

-Unification and Evaluation of Contribution Activities

-The platform will unify SDG contribution activities (activity units, locations, and content) currently being carried out separately around the world.

-By visualizing support and action records as "Social Impact (SI) Classes" and accumulating them as a history, we aim to contribute to measuring SDG achievement by linking this to individual employment and promotion and corporate evaluation. (Planned)

Role of each stakeholder:
*All stakeholders are wanted. There is no geographical restriction.

-Ordinary people worldwide (those who need support)
-Registering an SOS (ideally, register before a problem occurs)
-Knowing that they need support
-Connecting with organizations to receive appropriate care
-Receiving appropriate support and care
-Living a safe and independent life

Sports organizations/individual athletes
As an "ICONtact" each will be responsible for one of the global indicators and will carry out the following activities:
-Function as a contact point: Announce on the website that you are accepting help and advice regarding the
indicator, and when contacted, provide a primary response within 72 hours (see diagram below) whenever possible.
-Raising awareness of the issue itself: Digging deeper into the issue and disseminating accurate information.
-Collaboration: Properly collaborate with relevant parties (other indicator managers, various organizations,
samasama, etc.) both on an ongoing basis and when requested, to provide relief to SOS holders.

NPOs, social entrepreneurs, CSR officers at private companies, individuals with a strong desire to contribute to
society
- For each global indicator, we will act as a specialized consultation point for issue-specific support organizations
and individuals, and resolve issues faced by SOS holders.
- Support contact organizations
- Search for SOS holders by criteria
- Find potential users of existing services
- Persona information for new services (planned)
- Expand activities and launch socially beneficial services

Journalists and media
- Find SOS holders and register them on the platform (currently, contact the secretariat).
- If appropriate, research and interview SOS holders or their environments, and post images, videos, and text.
- Raise awareness of social issues throughout society through the media.

Calling for Action
Sport contributes to the SDGs as stated below:
”Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to
the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to
the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and
social inclusion objectives.”
Source: UNITED NATIONS, https://sdgs.un.org/2030agenda (accessed on August 18, 2025)
The Kazan Action Plan also speaks of "outcomes that go beyond the act of sport itself". While sports itself speaks
volumes, we believe the potential for achieving the SDGs lies not only in sports itself, but also in global unity
through sport.
Our company president, Kubo, has long been involved in sports, believing that sports can be "something" beyond a hobby or pastime. The value of sports may not just lie in winning. Sports can be a common thread for many people,
and conversations through sports can transcend ethnicity, gender, and social power.
Many people around the world are working to address social issues through sports. However, there has yet to be a
unified movement. Therefore, if we could aggregate social issue-solving activities on this page in line with global
indicators, even if it's just a small contribution, we believe that these activities may offer new insights for the
organizations themselves and enable them to achieve something significant, not just through individual activities but
as a whole.
We hope to harness the influence of sports to directly address social issues. We want athletes, who until now have
only thought about their sport, to take on the responsibility of spreading awareness of social issues. We believe that
taking on the right role will not only improve their athletic ability, but also increase social value.
However, we chose to start this activity even though the systems and networks necessary to realize our ideal
initiative were not even 1% in place. There is only one reason for this: we are deeply aware of the crisis that the
SDGs have not been achieved, and we decided that we should start doing our part to help, even if just a little. As a
result, we understand that this may cause inconvenience to our stakeholders. We would like to join forces with
anyone who sympathizes with our activities, whether as an organization, company, or individual.
Information on global indicators will be posted on the Institute's website, so we hope you will refer to it.
